We are currently offering Girl Scout culinary badge workshops and cooking classes for individual troops and organized groups (such as Service Units, etc.). If you are interested in scheduling a workshop for your troop, Chef Joel will be happy to work with you to accommodate your troop/group. He often teaches cooking classes at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 605 Spruce St., Madison, 53715 and the kitchen there works well for badge workshops. Chef Joel can reserve the kitchen there for a rental fee of $35. Or he can travel to a location of your choice (minimum of 8 participants). (Please note: For locations more than 10 miles from the Madison capitol building, Chef Joel may charge a small travel surcharge.) BADGE WORKSHOP COST is $35 per scout participant as of Jan 1, 2023. There is no cost for adults. Minimum of 8 participants required / minimum cost of $280. (NOTES: Kitchen rental is additional. This cost does not include the badge. If you would like for us to provide badges, please add an additional $3.50 per participant. Please let us know well in advance if you would like us to try to get badges for you.)

Chef Joel has worked with many Girl Scout troops and individual Girl Scouts to earn cooking and also Manners & Etiquette-related badges. FOR BROWNIES
Girl Scout Brownies Workshop: “Keep Calm and Snack On!” (Brownies Snacks Badge)
Complete all 5 steps of the Brownie Snacks Badge under the guidance of Culinary Instructor/ Professional Chef Joel Olson of Hemmachef. Discuss snack ingredients and the importance of local food and prepare 4 snacks: Vegetarian Vietnamese Summer Rolls; Oatmeal Drop Bars; Raw Mint Chocolate Energy Balls; and Sparkling Apple Cider Crush. (NOTE: Nut-free, Dairy-free, Vegetarian). Location: St. Mark’s. Class Cost: $35 per participant.
Girl Scout Brownies Workshop: “Edible Experiments!” (Brownie Home Scientist Badge)
Complete all 5 steps of the Brownie Home Scientist Badge under the guidance of Culinary Instructor/ Professional Chef Joel Olson of Hemmachef. Discuss the role of science in food preparation and enjoyment and demonstrate scientific principles involved in making these yummy foods: Homemade Bread; Homemade Butter; a Classic Vinaigrette Salad Dressing and Salad; Orange Fizz; Density Drink; and Edible Slime. (NOTE: All dishes are Nut-free and Vegetarian; most are Dairy-free.) Location: St. Mark’s. Class Cost: $35 per participant.
FOR JUNIORS
Girl Scout Juniors Workshop: “Take Charge: Cook It Yourself!” (Juniors Simple Meals Badge)
Complete all 5 steps of the Junior Simple Meals Badge under the guidance of Culinary Instructor/Professional Chef Joel Olson of Hemmachef. Discuss how to think like a chef and learn culinary skills while preparing 4 dishes: Breakfast Burritos featuring perfect Soft Scrambled Eggs; Tomato, Cheese and Lettuce Whole Wheat Butty (Buttery British Sandwich); No Cook Mini-Cheesecake Tartlets; and Composed Taco Salad with Crispy Chips, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Black Beans and Cheese with a Sweet and Savory Salad Dressing. (NOTE: All dishes are Nut-free and Vegetarian; most are or can be Dairy-free.) Location: St. Mark’s. Class Cost: $35 per participant.
Girl Scout Juniors Workshop: “Manners Matter!” (Junior Social Butterfly Badge)
Girls will learn proper table manners and modern-day etiquette rules as well as some basic culinary skills while preparing a meal under the guidance of Culinary Instructor/Professional Chef Joel Olson of Hemmachef. After cooking, girls will set the table then get to enjoy the fruits of their labor while practicing good manners and etiquette. Participants will complete all 5 steps of the Junior Social Butterfly Badge. On the menu: Homemade Biscuits; Green Salad with Classic Vinaigrette; Creamy Macaroni & Cheese; and Crème Chantilly with Fruit. (NOTE: All dishes are Nut-free and Vegetarian.) Location: St. Mark’s. Class Cost: $35 per participant.
FOR CADETTES
Girl Scout Cadette Workshop: “Culinary Adventures Await!” (Cadette New Cuisines Badge)
Complete all 5 steps of the Cadette New Cuisines Badge under the guidance of Culinary Instructor/Professional Chef Joel Olson of Hemmachef. Discuss the many culinary traditions and options available to an adventurous cook and learn culinary skills while preparing 4 delicious diverse dishes: Alloo Kay Kebabs (Pakistani Potato Patties); Vegetable Muffuletta Sandwiches (New Orleans-style sandwiches with vegetable); Fresh Fruit Vintage Smoothies; and Homemade Macaroni and Cheese. Participants will then “share their dishes on a Culinary Tour” by creating a buffet of the dishes to be enjoyed by all of the participants. (NOTE: All dishes are Nut-free and Vegetarian; most are or can be Dairy-free.) Location: St. Mark’s. Class Cost: $35 per participant.
Girl Scout Cadette Workshop: “You Are What You Eat!” (Cadette “Eating for You” Badge)
Complete all 5 steps of the Cadette “Eating for You” Badge: Learn how different foods affect your health, as well as your skin, your energy, your sleep, and stress levels. Girls will discuss the benefits of anti-oxidants and “Eating by Color” as well as other benefits of eating healthy foods while preparing 4 delicious and nutritious dishes under the guidance of Culinary Instructor/Professional Chef Joel Olson of Hemmachef. On the menu: Rainbow Salad with Creamy Herb Dressing; Rajma Masala (Red Bean Curry); Quick Tomato and Vegetable Soup; and Fresh- Made Hummus with Vegetables. (NOTE: All dishes are Nut-free and Vegetarian; most are Dairy-free.) Location: St. Mark’s. Class Cost: $35 per participant.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT OUR GIRL SCOUT BADGE WORKSHOPS:
Chef Joel encourages children to develop their love of food and fellowship by taking cooking classes. Children of all levels of ability, interest, and experience are welcome in Chef Joel’s classes.
Chef Joel has considerable experience working with individuals with special needs, including physical and developmental disabilities. He feels strongly that all individuals can successfully participate in culinary classes and works hard with all students to ensure that they fully participate in each class.
If your child has special needs, please let us know ahead of time so that Chef Joel can make sure to accommodate them.
LOCATION —
Chef Joel’s cooking classes are generally held at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 605 Spruce St., Madison, 53715. Chef Joel can reserve the kitchen at St. Mark’s for Girl Scout workshops for a rental fee of $35.
Class are held in the kitchen, which is in the basement. Please enter the building from the north side entrance (from Spruce Street), by the playground. There will be a sign on the door for the cooking classes.
Chef Joel may also offer workshops and classes in alternate locations, if the space will work. (Note: For locations more than 10 miles from the Madison capitol building, Chef Joel may charge a small travel surcharge.)
PARKING —
There should plenty of street parking available at St. Mark’s. There is also a small parking lot behind the building, accessible from Hickory Street.
DRESS CODE —
- Participants are encouraged to wear facial masks for food safety and disease prevention.
- Long Hair should be pulled back or put in a ponytail.
- Participants must wear close-toed shoes.
- Short-sleeved shirts are recommended.
- Hemmachef will provide aprons and towels to use during the class.
EQUIPMENT —
All equipment, foods, and materials necessary to complete the recipes are provided by Chef Joel.
CONSIDERATIONS —
Please inform Chef Joel of any of the following:
- Food allergies or restrictions, such as lactose-intolerance or celiac disease
- Special Physical Needs
- Special Educational Needs
CLASS PHILOSOPHY —
Participants are expected to behave with civility and respect for the Chef, the other participants, the equipment, and the food.
ADULTS IN CLASS —
Troop Leaders and parents and/or guardians are welcome (but not required) to stay during Girl Scout Badge Workshops.
PHOTOGRAPHS —
Chef Joel or other Hemmachef representatives may take photographs during class for use in marketing and promotional materials. No names or other personal information will be included in these photographs.
CLASS CANCELLATION POLICY —
Please inform Chef Joel as soon as possible if you will not be able to attend. Your full class payment will be refunded up to 5 business days prior to the date of the class. If you cancel after this time you will not receive a refund. You may have someone attend in your/your child’s place, however.
If Chef Joel must cancel for any reason, every effort will be made to reschedule the class, and if you cannot attend at the new time, you will receive a full refund.
INCLEMENT WEATHER —
Class will be conducted unless City of Madison buses are not running due to inclement weather.
