UPCOMING TEEN COOKING CLASSES IN MADISON WITH CHEF JOEL

CLASSES FOR TEENS:

Chef Joel offers some classes specifically for Teens or Tweens/Teens.  These cooking classes are appropriate for youth ages 13-17 years old (Teen classes) and youth ages 10-17 (Tween/Teen classes).  If you have any questions about whether classes are appropriate for you/your child, please contact Chef Joel at hemmachef@gmail.com.

Chef Joel enjoys working with teens and young adults and would be happy to offer more classes for older youth.  If you would like to arrange a class or private event for a group of teens, please contact Chef Joel: hemmachef@gmail.com.

Chef Joel encourages teens to develop their love of food and fellowship by taking cooking classes.  Youth of all levels of ability, interest, and experience from 8-16 years old are welcome in Chef Joel’s “Kids” cooking classes.  If you have any questions about whether classes are appropriate for your son or daughter, please contact Chef Joel.

Chef Joel has considerable experience working with individuals with special needs, including physical and developmental disabilities.  He feels strongly that all individuals can successfully participate in culinary classes and works hard with all students to ensure that they fully participate in each class.  If your teen has special needs, please let us know ahead of time so that Chef Joel can make sure to accommodate them.

SPECIAL CULINARY EVENTS FOR TEENS –

LOCATION –

Teen cooking classes are generally held at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 605 Spruce St., Madison, 53715.

Class are held in the kitchen, which is in the basement.  Please enter the building from the north side entrance (from Spruce Street), by the playground.  There will be a sign on the door for the cooking classes.

PARKING –

There should plenty of street parking available.  There is also a small parking lot behind the building, accessible from Hickory Street.

DRESS CODE –

Participants must wear close-toed shoes.
Long Hair should be pulled back or put in a ponytail.
Hemmachef will provide aprons and towels to use during the class.

EQUIPMENT –

All equipment, foods, and materials necessary to complete the recipes are provided by Chef Joel.

CONSIDERATIONS –

Please inform Chef Joel of any of the following:

  •         Food allergies or restrictions, such as celiac disease, lactose-intolerance, etc.
  •         Special Physical Needs
  •         Special Educational Needs

CLASS PHILOSOPHY –

Participants are expected to behave with civility and respect for the Chef, the other participants, the equipment, and the food.

PARENTS IN CLASS –

Parents and/or guardians are not encouraged to stay during teen cooking classes.  Please contact Chef Joel if you are a parent who feels your teen has special needs.

PHOTOGRAPHS –

Chef Joel or other Hemmachef representatives may take photographs during class for use in marketing and promotional materials, with parental consent.  No names or other personal information will be included in these photographs.

CLASS CANCELLATION POLICY –

Please inform Chef Joel as soon as possible if you will not be able to attend.  Your full class payment will be refunded up to 5 business days prior to the date of the class.  If you cancel after this time you will not receive a refund. You may have someone attend in your/your child’s place, however.

If Chef Joel must cancel for any reason, every effort will be made to reschedule the class, and if you cannot attend at the new time, you will receive a full refund.

Class will conducted unless City of Madison buses are not running due to inclement weather.

7/15 (Mon) – 5:00-7:30pm – Kids Summer Baking Series: Class 1

Does your child love to bake?  If so, these classes are for them!  They can take one, two or all three (no prerequisites required for any class).  They’ll have fun and be challenged learning new recipes and techniques for sweet and savory bakes to add to their baking repertoires.  Participants will make and bake a dinner dish for themselves and then prepare several additional recipes (and will get to take some home to enjoy with friends and family).  On the menu:  Beaten Biscuits; Sesame Wheat Braids; Sweet Potato Crescents; Lemon Cake; and for dinner: Potato and Cheese Pie.  Location: St. Mark’s.  Class Cost: $55.  (Cost for Series of 3: $150)  Email hemmachef@gmail.com to register.

7/29 – (Mon) – 5:00-7:00pm – Kids Burgers and Beignets

What could be better than burgers and beignets?!  In this class kids will learn to make two delicious fun alternatives to standard burgers.  Then they will learn how to make Beignets, French-style doughnuts from New Orleans as well as a tasty savory twist on this classic.  On the menu:  Southwestern Style Turkey Burgers with Roasted Pepper Salsa and Sour Cream; Sweet Potato and Black Bean Burgers with Teriyaki BBQ Sauce and Cilantro Lime Coleslaw; Ham and Cheese Beignets; Cinnamon Buttermilk Beignets.  Location: St. Mark’s.  Class Cost: $50.  Email hemmachef@gmail.com to register.

7/30 (Tues) – 5:00-7:00pm – Kids Dumplings and Donuts

Dumplings are delicious and incredibly versatile!  And donuts are pretty tasty, too.   In this class kids will learn to make 3 different kinds of savory and sweet dumplings, and will then learn a delicious recipe for classic baked donuts.  Hopefully there will be some left for them to take home to share!  On the menu: Chinese Pork and Shrimp Dumplings; Salmon Dumplings with Honey Soy Dipping Sauce; Glazed Strawberry and Banana Dumplings; and Baked Cinnamon Sugar Mini-Doughnuts.  Location: St. Mark’s.  Class Cost: $50.  Email hemmachef@gmail.com to register.

7/31 (Wed) – 5:00-7:00pm – Kids Chocolates and Caramels

Is anything better than chocolate?  Well, maybe homemade caramel…. and this class has Both!  Not only will participants get to learn how to make all of these delicious, decadent treats, but they will also get to sample them in class and take some home to share (or NOT!).  On the menu:  Double Chocolate Brownies with Caramel Sauce; Chocolate Cherry Pudding; Homemade Soft Caramels; Caramel Cookies; and Caramel Corn.  Location: St. Mark’s.  Class Cost: $50.  Email hemmachef@gmail.com to register.

8/5-6 – (Mon & Tues) – 5:00-7:00pm – Cooking, Manners & Etiquette Mini-Course

This class gives participants the opportunity to learn and practice the rules and rituals of basic manners and social etiquette in a fun and informal setting, whether they are going to off to school or simply spending more time dining in social settings.  Chef Joel has been teaching this highly popular, effective and ever-evolving etiquette class for over twenty years.  In the first class, participants will prepare their dinner, then sit and enjoy the rewards of their labor while discussing the concepts and rules of manners and etiquette.  In Class Two they will help to prepare a four-course meal and serve it in a formal dining setting.  As they eat, participants’ dining etiquette will be critiqued by Chef Joel in a fun and productive manner.  Recipes and handouts will be presented at the end of the course.  Location: St. Mark’s.  Course Cost: $90/two sessions.

Class one — On the menu:  Roasted Garlic Flatbread; Turkey Meatballs with Fresh Tomato Sauce and Noodles; Scandinavian Sugar Cookies.  Topics:  Common Courtesy; Manners and Etiquette 101; Guest and Host.

Class Two – On the menu:  Bread and Butter Basket; Summer Vegetable Soup; Garden Salad; Chicken Wellingtons au Jus; Rice Pilaf; Vegetable Garnish; Fresh Fruit Napoleons.  Topic:  Manners and Etiquette 102.

8/10 (Sat) – 1:00-3:30pm – Kids Blue Ribbon Baking

Learn to make fabulous recipes that could win you First Prize at the county fair!  Whether you’re baking to win or just for fun, these classic recipes will become favorites of all who get to taste them.  You will get to take some home to share, too.  On the menu: Cinnamon Streusel Muffins; Buttery Harvest Rolls; Pineapple Upside Down Cup Cakes; and Southern Peach Dumplings.  Location: St. Mark’s.  Class Cost: $55.

8/13 (Tues) – 5:00-7:00pm – Kids Candy

Spend the evening making some sweet summer treats!  Participants will get to make these yummy treats to taste and will also get to take some home to share (or not!):  Summer Peppermints; Coconut Joy; Strawberry Fudge Balls; and Candy Sushi.  Location: St. Mark’s.  Class Cost: $50.
