COOKING CLASSES IN MADISON

Chef Joel is adept at working with students of all ages and abilities, from children to adults, and making sure that everyone has a fun culinary experience while learning useful skills. His students have ranged from 6 year-olds to senior citizens, and many classes have included a wide age range of students. Chef Joel provides participants with safe, well-organized, fun-filled instruction, and strives to maintain a courteous, fair kitchen environment.

    This is the best cooking class your child will ever take!  Knife skills are fundamental culinary skills that can always be improved, whether kids have loads of or no cooking experience.  And if your child is just beginning to be interested in cooking, making sure that they learn proper, safe knife skills is the best way to start.  Chef Joel will teach real knife skills and techniques and will have kids practice, practice, practice so these knife skills will stay with them for as long as they cook!  Children are great at chopping, dicing and mincing when they learn the proper techniques and safety guidelines.  Kids will practice cutting a variety of fruits, vegetables, and bread.  They will learn special techniques for cutting onions, carrots, peppers and other vegetables, as well as learning how to paste garlic, mince parsley, and make chiffonade of lettuce.  Sign them up now for this intense hands-on life skills lesson with Chef Joel!  A light meal will be served.  Location: St. Mark’s.  Class Cost: $40.

    This popular and informative class helps you learn and practice the techniques that help take the chore out of cooking, plus impress your friends! Techniques include: deboning a chicken; dicing onions, carrots, peppers, celery, and other vegetables; pasting garlic; and cutting a selection of fruits. Knife selection, sharpening, and care will also be covered. Bring your own knives or use ours. A light meal will be prepared for class participants.  Location: St. Mark’s.  Class Cost: $60.

    Breakfast foods are some of everyone’s favorites, and they’re “not just for breakfast any more!”  After this class, your kids will be able to prepare great meals for themselves or others any time of day featuring classic breakfast staples.  Kids will learn the basics of egg preparations as well as many techniques for preparing egg-cellent dishes.  On the menu:  Classic Cheese Omelets; Maple Candied Bacon; Soft Scrambled Eggs; Broccoli, Cheddar and Bacon Breakfast Casserole; Egg Frittata; Apple-Stuffed French Toast with Apple Syrup; and Cinnamon Swirl Coffee Cake Muffins.  Location: St. Mark’s.  Class Cost: $50.

    Everyone loves bread, and learning to bake new kinds of bread is a fun talent that your kids will love to share.  In this cooking class, kids will practice basic bread-making techniques–measuring, stirring, kneading, proofing and working with yeast.  Then they will bake a variety of quick and yeast breads they’ll get to take home with them:  Naan – delicious pillowy Indian bread;  Hokkaido Milk Bread – delicious soft, light & fluffy bread from Japan.  Kids will learn the tangzhong method to make this wonderful bread.  Saboob – golden-baked Egyptian bread;  Barbari – a Persian flatbread primarily made in Iran; and Khobz – traditional round bread from Morocco, where it is served with almost every meal.  Location: St. Mark’s.  Class Cost: $55.
